For decades, the Bluewater Studio team has partnered with designers to produce museum exhibitions, branded environments, and experiential spaces. We deeply value the months (or even years) of visioning and effort that designers spend working to create impactful spaces for their clients.
We have fostered successful partnerships with talented design teams through dozens of unique and beautiful projects. Over the years, something has become clear: projects that we join early in the process stand out the most. When design teams and their clients bring Bluewater Studio in as a partner from the beginning, the project outcome is more successful and the process more seamless for everyone involved.
The benefits of early engagement include more than just staying on budget and on schedule. Together, we protect and preserve the creative design concept that forms the heart of each project.
We’d like to share insights and examples that show how early involvement from a production partner like Bluewater Studio elevates project outcomes for designers and their clients:
Design Integrity is Protected
When a production partner becomes involved after the design process, their role is often reactive: finding ways to cut costs or solve issues after key decisions are already finalized. This is where design intent can be compromised.
When Bluewater Studio is brought in early, we:
- Problem-solve with the design team for feasibility without altering visual or experiential goals
- Suggest alternative materials or construction methods that preserve the intended look and feel
- Identify budgeting red flags before they become problems
The Flyover Chicago ticketing experience, designed by Envoy and produced by Bluewater Studio, is a result of a mutual partnership between our teams. Close collaboration and prototyping resulted in a stunning, multi-level entry experience on Navy Pier featuring hundreds of addressable LEDs, touch-screen ticketing kiosks, and an engineered façade for transparent LED screens.
Budgets Stay Aligned
Estimating production costs at the end of design hinders productive decision-making. By joining project teams early on, Bluewater Studio provides solutions that keep design and budget aligned as the concept develops.
Early input from our team helps:
- Align the design intent and vision with real-world capabilities from the start
- Prioritize key features and experiences
- Eliminate costly rework
- Reduce overall risk for designers and clients
Decisions Become Strategic, Not Reactive
The best solutions come from proactively exploring options, not from rushing to fix problems under a tight deadline.
With early involvement, we help designers:
- Evaluate materials that achieve aesthetic, durability, budget, and sustainability goals
- Plan for lighting, media integration, casework, and facility integration requirements
- Understand structural implications of the space
The Museum of the Rockies brought our team in at the earliest stages of development for their new permanent exhibit. Working closely with designers at WeatherstonBruer Associates and interpretive planners at Lord Cultural Resources, we were able to remain in-budget and effectively produce an exhibition that contains over 150 specimens.
Production and Installation Experience is Smoother
Production through installation is where the design is finally realized. When our team is involved from the start, we are deeply aligned with all the nuances of the design and why certain details are essential.
This leads to:
- Cost and time savings through early problem-solving and accurate planning
- More efficient installations with fewer onsite surprises and adjustments
- Deeper communication with facility contractors and on-site staff
- A finished space that feels exactly like the design team imagined
Bluewater Studio realized Gensler’s design for three floors of branding at the Mars Global Innovation Center. This large and complex project was executed successfully due to our partnership with the design team from the beginning of the project, allowing us to problem-solve as a team and ensure that the space was completed within a tight timeline.
Early Access to Knowledge & Expertise
Bringing Bluewater Studio in early provides designers with direct access to decades of expertise in materials, fabrication methods, and production techniques. This early involvement helps guarantee that creative ideas are not only feasible but also optimized for timeline, durability, and cost.
Our team’s knowledge offers:
- Enhanced quality by selecting materials and methods that best support the design intent
- Improved efficiency in delivering both the design and the overall project
- Fewer redesigns and compromises, thanks to technical guidance
Great environments aren’t created in a vacuum. They emerge when teams work together to share information early, address challenges collaboratively, and remain aligned from start to finish.
Partnering with Bluewater Studio early in the project does more than save time and money: it honors, protects and enhances your story, your experience, and your design.
