The jackson home
A Civil Rights Landmark
Bluewater Studio is working closely with The Henry Ford design team to create and install an exhibit that tells the story of the Jackson Home and the leaders and activists who passed through, providing context for the essential work done there to secure voting rights for all Americans.
The Jackson Home, now over 100 years old, stands as one of several important landmarks that highlight Selma, Alabama’s role in the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Sullivan Jackson and Mrs. Richie Jean Sherrod welcomed their close friend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his allies into their home as a place to rest and strategize. From this home’s living room, key moments of the Civil Rights Movement were organized, including the Selma to Montgomery Marches and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
In 2023, The Henry Ford acquired the Jackson Home from owner Jawana Jackson, who asked them to acquire, relocate, and preserve this historic house, giving it a permanent spot in Greenfield Village.
The Jackson Home and exhibit is scheduled to open to the public in 2026.
