Masterpieces of American Art Pottery – The James J. Gardner Rookwood Collection
Bluewater Studio, in collaboration with Perkins&Will Branded Environments, created a stunning exhibit showcasing this fifty-two-piece collection produced by the Rookwood Pottery Company. Black-and-white photographs of American Indians that served as source material for each ceramic accompany the pieces either as a graphic print or as part of the comprehensive digital interactive.
This remarkable collection is permanently installed in a public space at the University of Cincinnati Gardner Neuroscience Institute, a premier destination for neurologic and psychiatric care, research, and education.
This collection and the related interpretive materials blend anthropology with art history to reveal the relationships between white settlers and Native Americans in general, between Cincinnati and the American Indian in particular, and ultimately between Rookwood artists and their American Indian friends. Bluewater Studio was responsible for consulting on the technical case specifications and the production and installation of the entire exhibit as well as the handling and mounting of this unique collection.
“It is…a state-of-the-art, museum-quality display of Rookwood pottery. Rookwood is something unique to Cincinnati. It’s something that was a great love for Jim Gardner.” – Dr. Joseph Broderick – Director of the UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute
